Richard Frank Hewett was born in Milford, Michigan on November 24, 1919 to Joseph Hewett and Lulu (Birch) Hewett. He graduated in 1939 from Jackson High School in Jackson, Michigan. After graduation Richard worked as a surveyor for his father. In October 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Southern Pacific during World War II. He was awarded numerous medals including two Bronze Battle Star Ribbons. He was discharged in January 1946 where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. Richard met the love of his life Helen Rood at the VFW in Jackson, Michigan. Richard and Helen were married on May 21, 1948 and spent 56 years together until Helen passed away in 2004.Richard worked as Production Control Supervisor in the automotive industry until retiring to Daytona Beach, FL in 1971. He enjoyed baseball games, daily long walks with Helen, gardening and reading books. He became a member of the YMCA in 2004. He was named Volunteer of the Year for 2006 and 2009. He made many lasting friendships there. On September 25, 2011 Richard was part of a salute to World War II Veterans Honor Air Flight to Washington D.C. He said it was very emotional trip that he would never forget. In 2012 Richard moved to Gillette, Wyoming after sustaining a broken hip. He was lovingly cared for by his daughters and son. He enjoyed spending time at the Senior Center, walking and working out at the Recreation Center and watching his great grandchildren play sports. Richard died on Thursday December 29, 2016 at the age of 97. Left to cherish his memories is his sister, Janet Garrett of Ormond Beach, FL; daughters, Diane Hewett and Linda Bailey of Gillette, WY, Sharon Davis of Palm Coast, FL, Patricia Bigford of Jackson, MI; son, Richard Hewett, Jr. of Gillette, WY; 7 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his loving wife Helen Hewett, his parents Joseph Hewett and Lulu Armstrong, his brothers, Robert Hewett and Joseph Hewett and sister Betty Ball. A private celebration of Richard's life will be held at a later date. A memorial has been established in Richard's name.
