Michael Merle Jordan

Funeral service for Michael Merle Jordan, long time resident of Campbell County, will be held Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at Gillette Memorial Chapel at 10:00 in the morning. Visitation will be held at Gillette Memorial Chapel from 8:30 to 10:00 prior to services. Interment to follow services at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery with military honors provided by the American Legion Post 42 Honor Guard. Michael Jordan passed away at home on June 1, 2016. He was born March 22, 1942 in Gillette, Wyoming to Merle and Naomi Jordan. Michael was raised on the family ranch in the Savageton community, and graduated from Gillette High School in 1960. He attended the University of Wyoming and graduated in 1964 where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering and completed the ROTC program. Michael was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army on September 27, 1964. In his military career, Michael served with the 1st Special Forces in Okinawa, Japan, and the 82nd Airborne, the 101st Airborne, and 173rd Airborne Brigade, and served 3 tours in Vietnam from 1968 to 1971 for which he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster. Upon returning to the States, Michael met and married his wife, Janet, in Ft. Campbell Kentucky, and adopted her six children. In 1976, the family relocated to the family ranch south of Gillette. He ran a successful sheep, cattle, and llama operation until retiring in 2002. Michael was an avid big game hunter throughout Northern America for which he was extremely proud of the trophies he collected. He also enjoyed playing bridge, Texas Hold'em, trap, skeet, and sporting clays. Michael is survived by his wife, Janet, of forty-two years, sons Robert (Rita), Philip (Trisha), Daniel (Sheryl), Benjamin, Scott and daughter, Shirley (Dave Hedstrom), and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister. The family requests that memorials be sent in Michael's name to Gillette American Legion Post #42.
