Funeral Service for Elton Earl Smith will be held at 11:00a.m, Thursday October 29, 2015 at First Baptist Church with Pastor Dan Holden of First Assembly of God officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery with full military honors provided by American Legion Post 42 Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00p.m., Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Walker Funeral Home.Longtime Gillette resident, Elton E. Smith joined his beloved wife, Tommye Nell, in heaven October 23, 2015. He passed away at their home of natural causes.Elton Earl Smith was born September 18, 1927 to Benjamin H. Smith and Mary Vallie (Calloway) Smith in Silsbee, Texas. He graduated for high school in Silsbee and later joined the army and was stationed in Panama. He was a very proud WWII Veteran. He played the clarinet in high school and continued his musical talents in the army. Elton was born with the love of music and dancing. Shortly after safely returning home from his army career he met the love of his life, Tommy Nell Chumley. They were married on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 1951. On July 23, 1957 their only child was born, Deborah Ann Smith. They loved to have a good time. These good times included trips with his sister, Evelyn (Smith) Tucker and her husband Lucian. They traveled many times to New Orleans, Galveston, and to football games, including the infamous 1954 Cotton Bowl when Tommy Lewis tackled Dicky Maegle from the bench. He opened a dance club in the mid 50's above the Blue Bonnet Caf in Silsbee, Texas. The admission to the club was one record in return for a lifetime membership.Elton's began working for Sinclair Oil Corporation in Silsbee, Texas. He also was a Farmers Insurance Agent. In 1969 he was transferred to Gillette while working for Atlantic Richfield Oil and Gas. He also continued to sell insurance. After retiring as a gas tester, in charge of a four state area, for ARCO he remained active working various jobs. Elton also enjoyed being a Ham Radio Operator.During his years of retirement he enjoyed all things his grandchildren were involved in and later his great grandchildren. The last few years spending time with his great granddaughter Colbie was the highlight of any day. He was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife, Tommye Smith and nephew Jerry Byrd.He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Ann McWilliams and her husband Rocky McWilliams; grandchildren Landon (Terri) McWilliams, Lane McWilliams, Leslie (Jarrett) German and Layton McWilliams; greatgrandchildren Patrick, Ryan and Drew McWilliams and Colbie German.He is also survived by his sister, Evelyn Tucker and her sons Walter and Tommy, their wives and children; his nieces, Betty (John) Gauntt, Pat Byrd and son Steven Byrd and family.
