Mildred passed away February 1, 2015 at the Primrose Retirement Home in Gillette, WY, surrounded by her family.Mildred was born the second child of five at the family home in Whitewood Valley, Whitewood, SD on February 22, 1925 to Hervey and Hazel Somers. She attended theBig Bottom School in Whitewood Valley and graduated as Salutatorian from Whitewood High School in 1942. She stayed home a year to help on the family farm as her mother's health was poor. When she was 17 she met Claude Kissack at a Saturday night dance in St. Onge, SD. They had only dated a short time before Claude was quite smitten with her and wanted to get married. However, she wanted to pursue other adventures so refused. Soon after that she moved to Seattle, WA, living with relatives while working as a nurse's aide at a Merchant Marine Hospital for a year. Her next move was back to South Dakota to attend the National School of Business in Rapid City, SD. After her training there she answered an ad for an office position with the F.B.l. in Washington D.C. and got the job! She started getting homesick for the Black Hills so transferred when an opening came up in Denver, CO, which was much closer to home. Sometimes she would purchase a bus ticket to go home to see her family for a few days. Quite an adventure for a country girl! After working for the government for 7 years, she returned to Rapid City for an office job. At this time, Claude and Mildred's paths crossed once again. Claude was now a widower with a young son, Claude Jr. They rekindled their romance, marrying on February 10, 1952, in Sturgis, SD. They lived in Custer, SD for a year where Sally was born, then moved to Newcastle where they had Doug and Bart. They purchased the Dave Whisler ranch near Rozet October 18, 1965. That was a very big day for them! Their family was completed with the birth of Quent. At this time the oil field was booming so Claude did oilfield trucking while Millie did the bookkeeping. Millie was a wonderful mother, wife and business partner as the work in the oilfield continued to increase. Claude passed away in December, 2006. Millie continued to live at the ranch until April, 2014 when she moved to the Primrose Retirement Home. Millie had a true heart for the Lord. Her greatest joys were spending time with her large family, friends and neighbors. She could be seen attending as many weddings, anniversaries, funerals and birthdays, as possible. She brought joy to many with hergifts and packages containing small, stuffed animals, candy or holiday trinkets. Millie often visited the nursing home to share there as well, giving hugs along the way. She met no stranger and had more "grandkids" than could ever be counted. She will forever be remembered for her love of anything red and more importantly, her loving, generous heart. Mildred is survived by her children Claude Jr. (Kathy), Sally, (John) Reynolds, Douglas (Jo), Bart (Kathy), Quentin (Wendy) and sister-in-law Jean Somers. She had 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Mildred Kissack was preceded in death by her parents, husband Claude, brothers Wesley, Dale and Stanley Somers and sister Norma Jean Smith.A memorial has been established to the Salvation Army, the Campbell County Healthcare Foundation- Cancer Pet Scan Project Only or to a charity of your choice.
