Memorial services for Shirley Ann Cartwright will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 8, 2012, at Westside Baptist Church in Gillette with Pastor Gary Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Pisgah Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Shirley Ann Cartwright, age 83, was born February 12, 1929 to Earl and Virginia (Lotz) Irwin in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She passed away on Thursday, September 6, 2012, at her home in Primrose Assisted Living in Gillette of natural causes. Mrs. Cartwright's family settled in Springfield, Missouri where she graduated from Central High School in 1947. She was a devoted Christian and an active member of First Baptist Church. She attended Southwest Missouri State College for three years majoring in English. On August 6, 1950 she married the love of her life, Paul Cartwright. During their 62 years of marriage, they had two sons. During her early married life, she and her husband moved throughout the state of Missouri following Paul's various jobs with Southwestern Bell Telephone. In 1968, they settled in Camdenton, MO where they lived for 42 years before moving to Gillette in 2010 to live close to their son and family. She was a devoted wife, homemaker, mother and grandmother. Shirley had many hobbies and interests including fishing, sewing, quilting, gardening, traveling and church activities. She loved to sing in the church choir, teach Sunday School and always helped with Vacation Bible School. Shirley was a substitute teacher for several years. She loved to joke and was always happy. Shirley especially enjoyed annual fishing trips to Texas where she and Paul caught so many fish they had fish fries for their church family when they returned home to Missouri. Mrs. Cartwright is survived by her husband, Paul; sons: Dan (Polly) of Gillette, Wyoming and John (Marilyn) of Parker, Colorado; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Wiggins of Prairie Village, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
