Memorial service for Bernard "Red" McGillis will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2012 at Walker Funeral Home, Gillette, Wyoming with Pastor Ernie Bishop of the Church of Christ officiating. "Red" McGillis, age 83, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Gillette, WY.Bernard A. McGillis was born January 28, 1929 to A. D. and Tacie (Salmond) McGillis in Choteau, Montana. He served in the United States Army from 1951 thru 1952 during the Korean Conflict. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Montana. Red married Delores Whisler on March 29, 1957, the couple had three children. He worked for many years as a rancher, heavy equipment operator and oilfield worker. Red eventually went to work for Amax Coal Company, where he was employed until his retirement. He began his career with Amax as a maintenance worker and retired as general mine manager, assisting with the start up of the Eagle Butte Mine north of Gillette, WY. Red was a hunter and fisherman and in his younger years liked to rodeo. He even had the singular honor of having his picture appear in a Wyoming State Road Map on a bucking bronco. Red enjoyed golfing, woodworking, traveling and telling stories. He also was a member of the Elks Club.Red is survived by his wife Delores of Gillette, WY; sons, David (Gay) McGillis of Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA; Leonard McGillis of Gillette, WY; daughter, Deb McGillis of Sheridan, CO; brother, Don McGillis; sister, Helen Sherman; two grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to a charity of your choice.
