Funeral service for William M. "Bill" Schmidt will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Gillette, Wyoming with Father Cliff Jacobsen of St. Matthew's Church and Pastor Martin Crump of the Family Life Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Gillette-Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, December 6, 2010 at the Walker Funeral Home. Bill Schmidt age 57, passed away on Thursday, December 2, 2010 at the Close To Home Hospice House from cancer. William Mark Schmidt, known to his family and friends as "Bill" was born on October 31, 1953 the son of Dr. D. and Gail (Schlosser) Schmidt in Ames, Iowa. Bill attended school in Schleswig, Iowa and graduated in 1972 from the Schleswig High School. He attended the University of South Dakota and Northwest Community College in Sheldon, Iowa. Bill met Cindy Moeller in Denison, Iowa and they were married on June 2, 1978 in Denison. They moved to Gillette, Wyoming in 1978 and have made their home here for thirty-two years. Bill and Cindy had two sons, Luke and Zach, both born and raised in Gillette. Bill was employed as an equipment operator for Campbell County Road and Bridge for numerous years. For the past twenty-two years he worked for Powder River Coal Company at the Caballo Mine as a heavy equipment operator. Bill was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golf. He was an accomplished horseman. His favorite pastime was watching the Denver Broncos, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Wyoming Cowboy teams. He was also a loyal Colorado Rockies fan. Bill's passion was spending time with his family and friends. He took great pride in his home, his garden and cooking. Bill had a keen interest in history and politics. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion. Bill is survived by his wife, Cindy Schmidt, of Gillette, WY; his two sons, Luke Schmidt of Gillette, WY; and Zach Schmidt of Spearfish, SD; his father Dr. D. Schmidt and wife Gloria of Schleswig, IA: three brothers, Fred Schmidt of Hong Kong, China; Bob Schmidt of Pierre, SD; and Don Schmidt of Tillamook, OR; and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gail (Schlosser) Schmidt and daughter, Andrea Schmidt. A memorial in Bill's name has been established to benefit the Close to Home Hospice and Hospitality House.
