Visitation for Betty Jean Smith will be 2-7 p.m., Friday, June 12, 2009 at Walker Funeral Home in Gillette, Wyoming. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at Beardsley Methodist Church, Beardsley, Minnesota with Pastor Anna Williamson officiating. Burial will follow at Beardsley Methodist Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-7 p.m., Monday, June 15, 2009 at Larson Funeral Home, Ortonville, Minnesota. Visitation will also be at the church one hour prior to service. Betty Smith, age 65, passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2009 surrounded by her family at her home in Gillette, Wyoming from cancer. Betty Jean Smith was born on February 13, 1944 the daughter of Delmer and Lauretta (Robertson) Mielitz in Ortonville, Minnesota. She was the oldest of twelve children. She attended country school and graduated from Ortonville High School in 1962. Betty married the love of her life Leonard Smith, February 13, 1964, the couple had one son. Betty was a homemaker for several years but when the family moved to Rock Springs, Wyoming in 1980, she worked as a secretary for DPASS. In 1993 they moved to Elko, Nevada and she worked as a secretary in medical records at Elko General Hospital. They moved again to Gillette, Wyoming in 1999 where she was also employed in medical records at Campbell County Memorial Hospital. Betty enjoyed scrapbooking, genealogy, sewing, cooking, planting flowers and fishing. She really enjoyed spending time with her family especially her granddaughter, The Apple of her eye. Betty is survived by her husband Leonard of Gillette; son, Leland Craig (Tammy) Smith of Gillette, WY; mother, Lauretta Mielitz of Ortonville, MN; granddaughter, Aleesha RaKae Smith; brothers, Terry (Judy)Mielitz of Big Stone, SD; Roger Mielitz of Rock Springs, WY; Duane (Linda) Mielitz of Rock Springs, WY; Neal (Terri) Mielitz of Big Stone, SD; Eugene (Julie) Mielitz of Watertown, SD; Lonnie (Kelly) Mielitz of Milbank, SD; sisters, Sally (Tim) Breske of Red River, MN; Sherri (Henry) Gimmestad of Big Stone, SD; Debbie (Brad) Lewis of Fargo, ND; Peggy (Melvin)Dockter of Big Stone, SD; Kristi (Tom)Chan of Ortonville, MN. She was preceded in death by her father Delmer Mielitz, and several aunts and uncles. A memorial has been established in Betty's name its use to be designated at a later date.
