Mattie I. Hughes, age 76, passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2009, at the Pioneer Manor Nursing Home of natural causes. Mattie Hughes was born on August 18, 1932, the daughter of William and Janie (Foster) Inge at Montpelier, Virginia. Mattie was raised and educated in the Montpelier area. As a young woman, Mattie started her career in the bookkeeping department with the Life Insurance Company of Virginia. She met Lewis Jennings and was married in 1950. They had one son and were later divorced. When she returned to the workplace, Mattie drove a school bus in Hanover County for several years. She returned to bookkeeping with several firms in Virginia, including Napa Auto Parts and Lewis Business Farms. She was employed as Assistant Innkeeper at the Ashland Holiday Inn for over a decade and closed her working career as a deputy with the Richmond City Sheriffs Department. Mattie met Jack Hughes in 1980 and they were married in 1981 at St. Peters Methodist Church in Montpelier, VA. Jack and Mattie continued to live and work in the Richmond, VA area until retirement in 1994. At that time they moved to Jacks boyhood home in Kilmarnock, VA. They remained there until Jack passed away in 2007. In 2008 Mattie moved to Gillette, Wyoming, to be near her son and daughter-in-law. Matties interests were varied and she enjoyed sewing, gardening, softball and bowling. Her greatest passion was spending time with her family and friends. Mattie was a member of the Kilmarnock United Methodist Church, VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Eastern Star. She was a very giving person, a quality she continued even in death. Mattie donated her body to the Sanford School of Medicine at Vermillion, South Dakota. She is survived by her son, Craig (Linda) Jennings of Gillette, Wyoming, her three step-children, John Hughes of Salt Lake City, Danise (Tom) Elias of Louisa County, VA, Tamara Hughes of Kitty Hawk, NC. her mother, Janie Foster Haney of Ashland, VA and four grandchildren. Mattie was preceded in death by her husbands and one brother Herbert Inge.
