Memorial services for Jerry Shatzer will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 25, 2008 at the Family Life church with Pastor Bill Morel officiating. Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home of Gillette is entrusted with the arrangements.Mr. Shatzer, age 71, of Gillette, Wyoming died at his home on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 of natural causes.Jerry Rhea Shatzer was born on January 25, 1937 the son of Richard C. and Evalyce "Peg" (Rhea) Shatzer in Sheridan, Wyoming. He was raised and educated in Ranchester. Jerry played basketball for Tongue River High School and graduated in 1955. Upon his schooling Jerry worked as a ranch hand for Padlock Ranch. In 1958 he entered into the service, he was stationed in Korea until his honorable discharge in1959. Jerry attended college at the University of Wyoming from 1959 until 1963, where he received his Bachelors in Commercial and Industry. During his summers in college he worked construction. After graduating from college he went to Prescott, Idaho where he attended flight school and received his pilot's license. Jerry then worked for Fulkerson Aviation, where he was a flight instructor and did charter flights for Jim Fulkerson. It was here that he met nurse, Marian Stevens on a medical charter. They were married on November 11, 1969. In August of 1970 he found out he had diabetes and could no longer fly. He then went to work for Stockmen's Bank. On June 20, 1972 the couple started their family when Curt Roy Shatzer was born. Three years later on June 14, 1975 they completed their family when daughter, Paula Rhea Shatzer was born. In 1975 Jerry went to work in the assessor?s office under Preston Gilstrap and was voted into office in 1976. He worked as the County Assessor for 30 years. Jerry retired in December 2006. He then built a house by Weston and enjoyed his retirement spending most of his time with his grandchildren and his favorite past time hunting with all of his family. In the fall of 2007 he went on his dream hunt, killing a 6 point bull elk in Northern Wyoming with his son. He was so proud of his daughter graduating from his Alma Matter, the University of Wyoming. Jerry will be missed by all who knew him. Jerry is survived by his son, Curt Shatzer and his wife Shanda and their sons: Colter and Connor all of Gillette, Wyoming; daughter, Paula Williams and her husband Greg of Sundance, Wyoming; and mother, Peg Hoffman and her husband George of Billings, Montana.He was preceded in death by his father, Richard; grandparents; and brother, Dusty.A trust will be established to benefit his grandchildren's education. Memorials in Jerry's name are suggested to benefit it.
