Funeral services for longtime Campbell County resident, Avis Harrod will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 1, 2007 at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home with Pastor Peggy Brown of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, November 30, 2007 at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home. Mrs. Harrod, age 96, of Gillette, Wyoming died on Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home of natural causes.Avis A. Harrod was born on December 8, 1910 in Lincoln County, Kansas the daughter of John and Myrtle (Kirkbride) Cook. As a young child she moved with her family to Wyoming, where they made their homestead south of Gillette. She was raised and educated in Campbell County graduating from Campbell County High School in 1927. After graduation she married Clifford V. Harrod on November 14, 1929 in Gillette. The couple made their home on their ranch south of Gillette. It was here they raised their only son Don, and resided until 1974 when they moved to town. Avis began her life long teaching career in rural Campbell County schools and later teaching math to 5th, 6th and 7th graders at Campbell County Public Schools. In 1959 Avis earned her bachelors degree in education from Black Hills State University Teachers college in Spearfish, SD. Avis was instrumental in starting the Campbell County Senior Center in Gillette, finding grants and funds to establish it. As a charter member she served not only as the president and secretary on the board but also as a volunteer for many years. She loved to play cards, Bridge in particular, and was a member of countless bridge groups. Avis enjoyed gardening in her younger years, loved to cook and was great at it. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and the First Presbyterian Church. Avis is survived by 1 grandson: Don Dee (Sheryl) Harrod of Everett, WA, 3 granddaughters: Dalene (Rich) Goetz of Gillette, WY, Brenda Harrod, and Donis (Sean) Hamtil of Springfield, MO; 3 sisters: Bernice (Roy) Hampton of Gillette, WY, Donna Jean Phenix of Madison, WI, and Pauline Haas of Saratoga, WY; brother, Cecil Cook of Gillette, WY; 8 great-grand children: Kirsten Richman, Cody Rush, Kris and Kody Rathai, Amanda (Goetz) Bellack, Ashley Reed, Tiernan and Annalise Hamtil; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1977, son Don in 2000, 4 sisters: Irene Persson, Ruby Fulkerson, Doris Wagensen and Opal Butcher, infant brother Allen and great granddaughter, Erica Goetz.Memorials in Avis's name are suggested to the Campbell County Senior Center.
