Funeral services for Opal Butcher will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 23, 2007 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Chris Carr. Burial will follow in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Sunday, April 22, 2007 at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home.Mrs. Butcher, age 95, of Gillette, Wyoming died on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home of natural causes.Opal was born in Barnard, Kansas the daughter of John and Myrtle (Kirkbride) Cook on February 11, 1912. Her family moved to a homestead near Pumpkin Buttes south of Gillette, Wyoming in 1920. Opal graduated from Campbell County High School in 1929. She taught in Rozet and other schools in Campbell County for several years. Opal married Ty Butcher in 1937 and moved to Sundance, Wyoming. In 1947 they moved to Glenrock, Wyoming where she lived until 2000. Between 2000 and 2007 she lived with her granddaughter in California and then in the Senior Apartments in Gillette. Opal, an avid reader, enjoyed education and graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1988 at the age of 76. She enjoyed athletics and won numerous gold medals in the Senior Olympics. She was a lifelong church member and was a member of the Eastern Star. Her long life was marked by energy, tenacity and endurance. Opal?s spirit will be greatly missed.Opal is survived by her three sons: Roger (Maxine) Butcher of Los Angeles, California, Burton (Zenaida) Butcher of Douglas, Wyoming and El Paso, Texas, and Carrick (Judy) Butcher of Glenrock, Wyoming; five siblings: Avis Harrod, Bernice Hampton and Cecle Cook all of Gillette, Wyoming, Pauline Haas of Saratoga, Wyoming, and Donna Jean Phenix of Madison, Wisconsin; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and three sisters: Irene Persson, Ruby Fulkerson and Doris Wagensen.Donations may be made to the UW Foundation Outreach Program in Opal?s name.
