Funeral services for Elsie Garrett of Gillette will be held 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at the Antelope Valley Baptist Church with Pastor Doug Rumsey officiating. Internment will follow in the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 19, 2006 from 3-7 p.m. at the Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Mrs. Garrett died on Saturday, September 16, 2006 at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home of natural causes.Elsie Ellen was born the daughter of Otis and Nancy (Beeler) Harrelson on July 3, 1917 in Clinton Missouri. She was raised and educated in Clinton. The oldest of six children, Elsie helped with chores on the family farm and helped care for her siblings. She married Ellis Ross Garrett on August 22, 1936 in Clinton. Ellis and Elsie purchased a home in Clinton when their daughter was an infant and Elsie resided in that same home for over 60 years. She was an active mother, always staying busy, acting as room mother countless times, and serving as a leader for Blue Birds and Campfire Girls as well as driving Dixie and her friends to all of their school and social activities. Elsie had only one daughter, but was a mother to many, children flocked to her, her entire life. When her daughter married, Elsie took her first job at Mattingly?s Dime Store. It was here that Elsie earned her name as the ?Candy Lady? for her work behind the candy counter. She is still affectionately called that today. After 20 years the store closed and Elsie went to work at Westwood Nursing Home as a cleaning lady. She enjoyed working there as her mother was a resident and it allowed her to be near her. After her retirement, Elsie enjoyed her hobby of quilting and loved to spend time visiting with her friends. In 2000, Elsie moved to Gillette to live with her daughter. In 2003, she began residing in Pioneer Manor Nursing Home. She loved her neighbors, staff and activities there. Elsie was a member of the Rebecca Lodge and Northeast Baptist Church of Clinton teaching Sunday School and Training Union for many many years. She is a current member of the Antelope Valley Baptist Church in Gillette. Elsie had a love for the Lord and rarely missed Sunday worship.She is survived by her daughter, Dixie Turner and her husband Lanny; grandson, Tim Turner of Omaha Nebraska; grandson in law, Jon of Butte, Montana; sister, Ann Johnson and her husband Scott of Clinton, Missouri; 3 great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Colton and Ashley, numerous great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 4 brothers: Raymond, James, Tom, George, infant sister, Betty and granddaughter Debbie.
