Funeral services for Roy Turner of Gillette will be held 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, September 6, 2006 at the Antelope Valley Baptist Church with Pastor Doug Rumsey officiating. Visitation will be from 3-7 on Tuesday, September 5 at the Stevenson ? Wilson Funeral Home in Gillette. A graveside service will be held 10:00 A.M. at the Caledonia Cemetery in Sparta, Illinois on Saturday, September 9, 2006. Stevenson Wilson Funeral Home in Gillette has been entrusted with the arrangements.Mr. Turner, age 91, died from heart complications on Sunday, September 3, 2006 at the Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Gillette.LeRoy Hall Turner, known to his family and friends as Roy, was born on September 26, 1915 in Huntsville, Missouri, the son of Elliott and Daisy (Leathers) Turner. After his schooling Roy began working for the shoe factory in Moberly for several years. He then served in a Civil Service camp as cook. Roy became good at cooking and he passed that talent on to his son Lanny. He married Lillian Margaret McDonald on June 27, 1937 in Huntsville, Missouri. Roy worked for Benson Coal, the present day Peabody Coal, as an exploration driller for thirty-eight years. This job required Roy to reside in many different towns through out America finally residing in Sparta, Illinois after his retirement in 1979. In 1999 Roy moved to Gillette to be near his son. The last couple of years he lived at the Beehive Home. Roy loved life there and became a spokesman for the homes? radio commercials. Roy?s hobbies included fishing and hunting when he was younger. He really enjoyed his time spent at the Senior Center?s in Sparta and Gillette both. He was a very active member and could be found helping set the tables, playing pool or visiting with friends.Roy was a member of the 1st Baptist Church in Sparta, Lifetime 3rd degree Mason in Kentucky and member of the Eastern Star. He is survived by his 1 son, Lanny Turner and his wife Dixie of Gillette; 1grandson Tim Turner of Omaha, Nebraska; 3 great-grandchildren: Alexandra, Colton and Ashley; 1 brother, Dwight Turner of Louisville, Kentucky; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter Debra Diane Creech; 2 brothers and 1sister.Memorials and condolences can be sent in Roy?s name c/o Stevenson ?
